Why do all the page numbers in my document display as 0?

Word 2002 will display 0 for all page numbers in headers or footers, and all page numbers in a Table of Contents, in the following circumstances:

• A header or footer contains a table, and
• the same header or footer contains a floating picture, and
• the floating picture is anchored to a paragraph within the table, and
• the header or footer, or its corresponding header or footer, contains the page number.

"Corresponding" refers here to the pairs First Page Header/First Page Footer; Even Page Header/Even Page Footer or Odd Page Header/Odd Page Footer. For example, if the Even Page Header contains the picture, and the Even Page Footer contains the page number, then that page number will display as 0.

There are three possible workarounds:

• Format the picture as an in-line picture, not a floating picture. To do that, right-click the picture. Choose Format Picture, then Layout. Choose In line with text. You now won't be able to drag the picture with the mouse, so you will have to position it like an ordinary character.
• Anchor the picture to a paragraph outside the table. To do this, make sure you can see anchors, by choosing Tools > Options > View and checking Object Anchors. Click the picture, then click and drag the anchor to another paragraph. You may then need to re-position the picture. In theory this works. In practice, it might be hard to position the picture as you want it. To get better control, click the picture and choose Format Picture > Layout > Advanced. Use the options there to position the picture.
• Create the header or footer without using a table. To delete the table, but retain its contents, click within the table and choose Table > Convert > Table to Text. You can ensure that the text is positioned as you want it by setting tabs in the appropriate places.
