How to select a graphic (or other drawing object) that has been sent behind text

If the Drawing toolbar isn't visible, right-click any other toolbar and choose Drawing. The Drawing toolbar includes a graphic selection tool that looks like a larger-than-normal hollow white selection arrow:   

Simply click on this tool, then drag a rectangle around the graphic. This will select it even if it is situated behind the text. (After selecting the graphic, press Escape or click the graphic selection tool a second time to deselect it.)
